Validation of Satellite-Based Precipitation Products from TRMM to GPM

The global precipitation measurement mission (GPM) has been in operation for seven years and continues to provide a vast quantity of data at finer temporospatial resolutions with improved accuracy coverage. GPM’s signature algorithm, the integrated multisatellite retrievals GPM (IMERG) is next-generation product expected wide variety research operational applications. This study evaluates latest version (V06B) IMERG its predecessor, tropical rainfall measuring (TRMM) (TMPA) 3B42 (V7) using ground-based gauge-corrected multiradar multisensor system (MRMS) products over conterminous United States (CONUS). spatial distributions all are analyzed. error characteristics further examined winter summer by an decomposition approach, which partitions total bias into hit bias, biases due missed false precipitation. volumetric categorical statistical metrics used quantitatively evaluate performance two satellite-based products. All show similar climatology some regional differences. perform better eastern CONUS than mountainous Western CONUS. evaluation demonstrates clear improvement comparison predecessor 3B42, especially reducing summer, winter, resulting capturing lighter heavier
